Abstract

Introduction: High rates of self-medication generate a serious public health problem due to increased morbidity and mortality. During the pandemic generated by infections due to SARS-CoV-2, self-medication was very common due to high death rates and lack of knowledge of effective treatment. Characterizing the population that self-medicates is important to be able to intervene with prevention programs aimed at the safe and effective use of medications in this disease. Objective: To characterize self-medication in Bachelor of Pharmacy students infected by SARS-CoV-2 through an online survey to establish programs that allow responsible self-medication in this population. Methodology: Descriptive and cross-sectional study in 167 students of the Bachelor of Pharmacy who accepted to fill out a survey in Google Forms, during the period from February to July 2022. Results: 44.3% of the students surveyed were infected by SARS-CoV -2 and 74.3% self-medicated. The habit prevailed in the female sex (74.2%). The most frequent reason for self-medication was pain (40.3%) and the most used medication was Paracetamol (26.6%). 33 adverse reactions were reported, with 42.4% presenting adverse reactions to the next-day tablets. Conclusions: The prevalence of self-medication in this population was high, medications that caused adverse reactions were used and combined, and medications that required a prescription were used, so it is necessary to implement a prevention program aimed at the safe and effective use of medications in this population.
